Trichoderma injection for trunk and root diseases.

Vinevax Bio-Injection is a natural trunk injection treatment with activity against many trunk and root diseases, such as Eutypa lata, Botryosphaeria stevensii, Cylindrocarpon destructans and Armillaria root rot.

Vinevax Bio-Injection comes in a 100g pack.

Mix with 1L clean water and this creates 50 x 20ml doses.

Drill a 6mm diameter hole to a depth of 25-100mm (depending on trunk size) horizontally into the trunk of the tree or vine.

Kiwifruit vines: Drill into healthy wood 100mm above the ground. 20ml per vine for mature vines.

Fruit Trees: Drill at least 100mm below the lowest branch. 20ml for medium sized trees or apply multiple injections around large trees.

Always use the Vinevax Bio-dowel to fill the injection hole.

How does it work?

The active ingredient in the Bio-injection travels through the vascular tissue for a fast-acting, cost-effective protective treatment for your valuable vines.

Research has shown that these strains colonise around the parenchyma cells at the heart of the vine tissue and stimulate the plant’s natural protective defence mechanisms. This protects the plant from destructive fungi such as Armillaria spp or Eutypa lata and sustains healthy thriving vines.

Acting as a living barrier, Vinevax Bio-Injection prevents pathogens from affecting the kiwifruit vines and because of this, it is best used preventatively. The best method of treatment is to set up a protective cordon of treated vines around an affected area to prevent further spread.

In areas of severe disease, Vinevax Bio-Injection forms part of an integrated approach that might involve further ground drenches such as Unite and applications of compost.

Vinevax Bio-Injection is listed on the Zespri CPS as a registered product for the treatment of Armillaria in kiwifruit vines.

Trial Results

Armillaria root rot

Armillaria root rot is a major problem in the New Zealand kiwifruit industry and has been for at least 30 years. Armillaria can survive many years in wood debris, such as old stumps from historic shelter belts, and the infection is commonly transferred underground at root level via rhizomorphs which consist of a fungal mycelial structure commonly known as “boot laces”.

New infections occur when healthy roots grow close to these rhizomorphs, and once inside, the pathogen colonises the roots and the base of the trunk.

Stressed vines can be affected and collapse very quickly, particularly if under stress from carrying fruit, and healthy vigorous vines can only slow the spread.

Methods for controlling the spread of Armillaria are largely managerial and restricted to confinement by removing entire dead or dying vines and minimising the stress on vines in the surrounding areas.

As part of the development of the Vinevax Bio-Injection, a total of 127 orchard were visited in the Bay of Plenty and 12,993 vines were surveyed. The treatments commenced in 1994 and carried through 3 seasons until Autumn of 1997 and the survey data was grouped into orchards with light or heavy disease.

In May 1998, all orchards which had received treatment were visited and the number of deaths and the season of death was recorded.

Vine survival rates

Treatment was a 20ml dose administered by hydraulic injector at the base of the vine. In all instances, the hole was closed with a Vinevax Bio-dowel.

The vines selected for treatment were required to meet the criteria that there were no obvious visible symptoms showing at the times of treatment although the discoloured drillings often suggested infection was present.

Results from previous trials suggested survival rates of no more than 80% survival.

The cumulative survival rate of treated vines after 4 years was 93%,  showing that the use of the Vinevax Bio- injection increased survival under all disease pressure.

We recommend treating a protective cordon three vines deep around areas of infection and cost of treatment is approximately $8/vine.
