Use Vinevax Bio-Dowels to tackle Grapevine Trunk Disease

Vinevax Bio-Dowel is a unique product in the industry and is registered in New Zealand for Eutypa Lata and Botryosphaeria spp.

Grapevine trunk disease is a major problem in both the New Zealand and Australian wine industry. Vinevax Bio-Dowel is a unique product in the industry and is registered in New Zealand for Eutypa Lata and Botryosphaeria spp.

Whilst the application of a single dowel can help to maintain yields in under performing blocks, vine reconstruction is the only viable alternative to replanting for long term vine health.

To ensure this work is viable for the long-term, use a dowel under the new water shoot.

In the 1990s, many trials were set up and monitored in major winemaking regions of Australia and New Zealand. Major growers, including Henschke, Petaluma and Kaesler undertook independent evaluations and consistently tracked elevated yields and fruit quality in treated areas.

One such trial in the Hawkes Bay, New Zealand trialed the dowel when re-working a large area of vines. The treated vines had a single dowel inserted at the base of the water shoot when the old trunk was removed. The wound was then painted with Vinevax wound dressing.

(%) Vinevax Bio-dowel keeps re-trunked vines clear of GTD's.

The assessment was made on the following basis:

0 = clear; 1 = leaf yellowing; 2 = leaf yellowing + stunting of growth;

3 = leaf yellowing + stunting + die back; 4 = extensive die back – entire arm; 5 = dead vine

After 4 seasons, the Vinevax treatment effected complete clearance of symptoms in 97% of vine.

This compared to only 10% of vines being clear of disease in the untreated area.
